Opportunities for Freshwater Aquaculture

Synexe is currently looking at opportunities for freshwater aquaculture in New Zealand.

Although New Zealand enjoys relative success in its marine aquaculture sector, there is not yet a developed freshwater sector. Compared to other countries internationally, New Zealand ranks amongst the top in terms of abundance of freshwater yet to date aquaculture in New Zealand remains focused on marine species.

Te Wai Maori Trustee Ltd. has been working since 2005 to advance Maori interests in freshwater fisheries, and as part of this work, is seeking to develop long term strategies relating to freshwater aquaculture of indigenous species for Maori.  To assist with furthering this strategy, Te Wai Maori has commissioned a report from Synexe, in partnership with Nesus & Associates, looking at the activity of freshwater aquaculture in New Zealand.

The project will identify opportunities for freshwater aquaculture in New Zealand; analyze the impact of freshwater aquaculture on wild stocks; identify how the activity is being undertaken in New Zealand and internationally; and look at how freshwater aquaculture could provide for customary interests.
